The Science Behind Intrepid

We are one of only a few training courses that base everything we do on tried and tested methods that have been created,  researched and accepted in the world of psychology and current scientific knowledge. From proven approaches such as dealing with anxiety, depression, and trauma (e.g. PTSD), through to elite sporting and personal performance, our methods incorporate some of the very best approaches to achieving more successful outcomes and overcoming your personal inner barriers.

While it’s in no way essential for you to understand these, it may help you to see that we really do know what we are doing; and that we follow rigorous standards when following these principles to ensure your progress, safety and wellbeing. Please note that Intrepid is about the application of the science (rather than the science itself). Intrepid is you doing it… not a science class! Instead, we touch upon only what is needed for you to actually be able to apply the tools most effectively.

So that said, Intrepid is built using the following key theories, methods and science to ensure what we do is effective:

The Brain

It's role in your success

With the physical brain being the master control for our bodies, emotions, conscious and unconscious, it is important that we understand what happens when aspects such as fear and axiety are triggered. It is also important to understand what happens to us under certain situations, as well as how to train ourselves to take advantage of what our brains and minds are capable of.

We focus more on the simple understanding of what is happening inside each of us when encountering challenge, fear, anxiety, etc. and how to better master it to your advantage.

Intrepid programmes pay particular attention to:

The Thalamus-Amygdla direct pathway, and the AAC (Anterior Cingulate Cortex)

Cortisol, Adrenaline, and exhaustive effects

Affective Priming

The RAS (Reticular Activating System) and its role as the gatekeeper of information

MBSR– (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) and Cortical Thickening

System 1 Vs System 2 (Dual Process Theory)

The Psychology of Performance and Achievement

Psychology is the scientific study of our thinking. Intrepid brings together experience-based exercises using the very best learned from performance and behavioural psychology.

The science studies how both our conscious and unconscious minds affect what we do and so affect our outcomes, as well as how to better take more conscious control over what is negatively affecting us. Intrepid concentrates on how you can apply what works to your everyday world. Intrepid makes practical and simple what is vast field of study and research.

We draw from the most impactful and effective fields and  accepted theories in performance and behavioural psychology using :

Goal Setting Theory – Locke & Latham (2003)

Humanistic Theory – Carl Rogers (1977)

Personal Construct Theory – George Kelly (1955)

Experiential Learning Theory – Kopf & Kreuse (1996)

Self Efficacy Theory – Albert Bandura (1994)

Mindset Theory – Carol Dweck

Prospect Theory – Kahneman & Tversky (1977)

While the above are  mostly overarching fields of psychology that form the foundation of our approaches, at Intrepid we also craft our development programmes to hone in on and conquer  a number of further areas of psychology specific to performance and behaviour including:

Heuristics & Biases – Daniel Kahneman & Amos Tversky PhD (1974)

Backfire Effects – Nyhan, Brendan & Reifler (2010)

Behavioral Economics / Nudge Theory - Thaler & Sunstein PhD (2008)

Positive Psychology  – Seligman and Csikszentmihalyi (1998)

The Psychlogy of Beliefs – Michael Shermer PhD (2011)
